NATE BARGATZE/COLDPLAY - 10.5.2024
SNL spoofs last week's VP debate, comedian Nate Bargatze returns to host, and Coldplay, The Lonely Island and Jane Wickline perform new music.
Welcome back to another edition of Sunday Morning Live!!! Last night, Nate Bargatze hosted for his second time, with musical guest Coldplay.
ICYMI: Last week’s season premiere of SNL drew 5.3 million viewers in a single day, making it the most-watched premiere since 2020. Also, Spirit Halloween responded to SNL’s sketch from last week with their own SNL costume.
Let’s take a look at this week’s episode!
Cold Open
Earlier this week, vice presidential candidates JD Vance and Tim Walz took the debate stage. SNL used the Cold Open to parody the event, with Maya Rudolph as Kamala Harris, Andy Samberg as Doug Emhoff and Dana Carvey as Joe Biden watching the debate together. The sketch poked fun at Vance’s (Jim Gaffigan) refusal to engage with live fact-checking and Walz’s comments on Tiananmen Square.
Monologue
Last night marked Nate Bargatze’s second time hosting. Given Bargatze is a comedian, his monologue was a mini stand-up set. Bargatze joked about his experience taking remedial classes at community college and his struggles using DoorDash to order food.
Best Sketches
“Golf Tournament”
Nate Bargatze plays an unlucky star golfer who keeps accidentally attacking innocent animals on the course. RIP Fairway Fred.
“Water Park”
A group of lifeguards and EMS workers debate what to do with a man who died at the top of a water slide. Should they take him down the stairs filled with kids, or just push him down the slide he’s already at the top of?
A fun fact about this sketch is that it actually came from a stand-up bit by cast member Michael Longfellow. I saw him perform last year and thought it was hilarious when he told this story then, so it’s pretty cool to see it turned into an actual sketch.
“Sushi Glory Hole”
It’s always an exciting moment to see “An SNL Digital Short” pop up on the screen. The Lonely Island made their return to appear as businessmen pitching the ridiculous idea of feeding holes in bathroom stalls for discreet, quick sushi eating, all in the form of a rap. Now I can’t stop saying “Hear us out!”
Also! Nate Bargatze reprised his role as George Washington for another Washington’s Dream sketch, this time sharing ideas of confusing English words (like how hamburgers have no ham.) Marcello Hernandez led Sábado Gigante, a wacky Spanish game show sketch with Bargatze as a clueless, non-Spanish speaking contestant. This sketch is based on a real series, but even if you aren’t familiar with it, it’s still funny because then you can relate to the confusion of Bargatze’s character.
Worst Sketches
“Mile High Burger” and “Coach Alan”
Neither of these sketches were terrible—this was a solid episode overall. But despite it being hilarious seeing Heidi Gardner absolutely commit to demolishing a messy dinner plate, “Mile High Burger” dragged a little too long. “Coach Alan” had a funny premise, but the sketch fell short with a runtime that wasn’t long enough and made it feel a bit too one-note.
Best Update Bit
Colin Jost shares a statistic that 71% of Gen-Z have cut back on going out at night, so Jane Wickline appeared on the Weekend Update desk for the first time to perform a silly song about staying way too long at a party.
Musical Guest
Coldplay appeared as musical guest for their eighth time, performing two of their newest singles. Little Simz and Elyanna joined the group for their performance of “WE PRAY,” while their second song, “All My Love,” featured a self-playing piano as the backdrop.

That’s your rundown! Let me know — what did you think of this week’s episode?
The next episode of Saturday Night Live, featuring host Ariana Grande and musical guest Stevie Nicks, airs on October 12. See you Sunday!
